When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

Submitted by: CBS Dental, 2645 Topsail Road

The general rule for a first dentist visit is six months after eruption of the first tooth or about one year of age. Taking your child to the dentist at a young age is the best way to prevent problems such as tooth decay, and can help parents learn how to care for their child’s teeth. After all, decay can occur as soon as teeth appear. Bringing your child to the dentist early often leads to a lifetime of good oral care habits and acclimates your child to the dental office, thereby reducing anxiety and fear, which will make for plenty of stress-free and fun visits in the future.

Don’t Get Left in the Dark!

Submitted by: Red Seal Electric Ltd., 231 Peachytown Road

Power failures can be a real pain if you’re not prepared. Power outages disable heating, freezers, refrigerators and lighting. If the power outage lasts for any length of time, your home can become uncomfortable and possibly uninhabitable: your water pipes may freeze, the food in your freezer may thaw, or your sump pump may fail, flooding your basement. Any of these events can quickly become expensive. Planning ahead for a power outage is a wise strategy because we can expect more problems with grid reliability in the future. Get your backup generator ready now and transform your next power outage from an unpleasant surprise (or worse) into a minor inconvenience. All equipment should be installed by a certified electrician.

Banish the Winter Blahs

Submitted by: Hickey’s Greenhouses and Nursery Ltd., 689 Conception Bay Highway

Winter is often considered downtime for the gardener, but it’s also planning time. It’s a great time to wash out containers and rinse with a light bleach solution to kill insect eggs and other nasty things. It’s also a great time to sharpen all your garden tools for spring. Some lovely things to plant for winter enjoyment and a splash of color are Holly, Red Twig Dog Berry, and Flowering Kale & Cabbage (an annual which show up stunningly if we get a mild spurt during the winter and they get exposed above the snow). Turn your autumn planter into a winter masterpiece by adding spruce, pine, holly, and colored twigs, and then add some water. Once everything freezes, these greens will be frozen in the pot and stay fresh looking until April! To lift your spirits even further, create a winter wonderland scene in a jar using artificial snow, sticks, and pine cones! To finish the project put the lid on the jar and turn upside down!

How an Accountant Can Help Your Business

Submitted by: Darlene Hennebury Chartered Accountant, 39 Emmas Place

Many business owners admit that accounting and financial management are their greatest weaknesses. However, without a focus on these areas, many businesses fail within the first 5 years. A qualified accountant will help guide you in financial matters and help grow your business. When you choose your accountant, you need to look for someone who will be a key player on your team, someone who will give sound advice and direction to help you succeed in your business. You will need someone who knows accounting as well as taxation, explains financial information clearly, and shows genuine concern about your business. When you find an accountant who is the best fit for your business, you will begin to see the difference.

Have You Considered Mobile Spa Services?

Submitted by: A Polished Touch, 66 Greelytown Road

Mobile spa services are growing in popularity across Canada as more and more people have less and less time to visit traditional brick and mortar beauty shops. Mobile spa clients do not have to worry about waiting for an appointment, using gas, or spending time driving to a salon; all of which makes this service very attractive to busy consumers. A mobile spa provides services to people who are not able to get to a salon, i.e. expectant mothers, stay at home moms, business travellers, people who have had surgery, the elderly, and the disabled.
